Orange: Wadsworth

Yesterday we went to Wadsworth museum and saw famous paintings and made pattens on notebooks a puzzles.

We looked at the Artwork of Sol Lewitt, a conceptual and minimalist artist from Hartford who did work related to our last project (2D to 3D). In his 2D drawings and wall paintings, and his 3D sculpture, Lewitt focuses on line, shape, and pattern. -Miss R

Today in art we started to finish our aluminum sculptures. Those of us that wanted to paint our our sculptures put papier mache on them. Once we are done we will then paint and finish.

Today, we put papier mache on our sculptures so when we are done, it will not fall apart. We have to do it everywhere, the sculpture ended up wrapped with newspaper, on monday it will be stiff and stay up.

Today we did some fun stuff we got to paint . And tell what we like and i wrote that i love to sing because i want to be a singer when i grow up and i love paint. and alicia keys is my role model.

Today the orange group started a sculpture project by looking at artists who do both 2D and 3D work. They created drawings in their own personal style, and are using these drawings as inspiration for sculptures. Today some students started their aluminum foil sculptures, and tomorrow they will continue to build and begin to cover them in papier mache so that they can be painted next week. - Miss R

Green: Earthworks

Since the green group finished our dream (nightmare!) scene early, we got to go outside and do a special project based on Earthworks artists. To learn about what Earthworks are we watched part of a documentary called "Rivers and Tides" about the artist Andy Goldsworthy.

today i did a prop for my costume which is a tiara or crown. i'm suppose to be a queen of vampires in space. i have the crown, clothes, fangs, and a red wig as blood. i have to go now so bye.

Today we finished our surrealist dream scene project! We completed the background and our costumes and props, and everyone contributed to the final product by either posing in the photograph or helping to direct and take the photo. -Miss R

Today in art people made props attach to our half beach half space. All I did was make a beach ball with different colors and Z made a beach ball. So basiclly all we did was make props and it was fun and we helped put our half beach and half space up.

The green group visited the library and the University of Hartford today! Yesterday the green group boys (the girls were meeting with the girl scouts) did printmaking! See the how-to section for an explanation of how to make your own prints!

How To: Printmaking!

Printmaking is the process of making a piece of art by "printing" an image. Prints can usually be reproduced (or created over and over again) because you are using a printing plate (which is basically a large stamp). Printing plates can be made of wood, linoleum, fabric, metal, or even found objects. For our printing project, the printing plate will be a piece of styrofoam.

Even though we had some fancy tools like printmaking rollers and a press when we did this in class, with a couple little changes this is something you can do easily at home too! (If you need to see any of the pictures bigger, just click on them!)

Materials you need:
-Two or more styrofoam plates or trays
-Scissors
-Tape
-A pencil
-A few pieces of paper
-Paint (or washable markers)
-A paintbrush

STEP 1
Cut one of the styrofoam plates or trays so that all you have is the FLAT part. This will be your printing plate!

STEP 2
Use your pencil and one of the pieces of paper to make a drawing that you will print. Remember two things: your drawing can't be bigger than the piece of styrofoam you just cut, and that anything you write will come out backwards when you print it! So if you want words, you have to write the word and the letters backwards!

STEP 3
Tape your drawing on top of the printing plate, and trace over your drawing. Make sure you press hard! You might rip through the paper a little bit but that's okay.

STEP 4
Peel off your drawing. If the drawing is not clear or deep enough, you might have to trace over it again with your pencil.

STEP 5
Cut your printing plate into any shape you want.

STEP 6
If you are using paint: Put your paint into the extra styrofoam plate. Use your paintbrush to move it around the whole plate.

If you are using markers: Skip step 6!

STEP 7
If you are using paint: Put a piece of paper under your printing plate so you don't get paint on your table. Then use your paintbrush to put paint on your printing plate. Try not to get it in the parts where you traced in your drawing, or the drawing won't print as well!

If you are using markers: Draw on your plate with the markers. Try not to get it in the parts where you traced in your drawing, or the drawing won't print as well!

STEP 8
If you are using paint: Skip step 8!
If you are using markers: Your paper has to be wet first for the marker to go from the printing plate to the paper. Don't get it SOAKING though, or it will be too wet. A good way to do it is to rub the paper with a wet paper towel.

STEP 9
Put a piece of paper down on your printing plate. Hold the paper down with one hand and use your other hand to rub all around the paper. Press hard!

STEP 10
Peel off your paper! You made a print! Put it somewhere flat to let it dry.

Now you can rinse off your printing plate and print again! Try using different colors, printing on different kinds of paper, or adding to your drawing and printing it again to see how it changes!

Green & Orange girls: Free Day

Since we only had the girls today (the boys were visiting a barber shop to learn about how things run there) the orange and green groups met together for a free art day. We had one table of drawing and origami, one table of collaborative painting, and one table of printmaking.

Orange: Exquisite Corpse Game

'Exquisite Corpse' is a game that was invented by the Surrealist artists in the 1920's. They used it not only as a game, but as a part of their creative process. To play, a group of people fold a piece of paper into 3 to 5 sections, and the first person draws in the first section. The paper is passed around the group, and each time the artist folds back the parts before theirs, so the next person can only see what was drawn right before them. In the end, the paper is unfolded and the (usually silly) collaborative drawing is revealed. -Miss R

dear blog,
first in class i traded art cards ... well collected 1 of each . i had extra cards so mrs . Richards said to keep then. next, we sat in a circle on the floor and looked alter egos pictures like beyonce acting like sashe fierce. then we all came back to our seats and had to make our own alter ego but it had to be like an oppisite of something. i did lady gaga as a little girl, not famous, and laying on a bean bag dreaming about being famous .
